Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on higher education institutions. Online education has become a new norm that may induce lifestyle alterations and adversely affect university students' health.
Objective: To access the impact of physical and mental health on undergraduate dental students during online classes.
Methodology: The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory Student Survey (CBI-S) was employed to evaluate the mental health of the students. Depression levels were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale, while the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15) scale was used to assess common physical health symptoms. Standard deviation and frequency distribution were done using descriptive statistics. The Chi-square test was utilized to assess the association between the variables.
Results: In total 228 students participated in the study, among respondents most of them belonged to the age group of 20 to 26 years and the mean age was 22.4 (±0.9) years. Overall, CBI-S indicates that emotional exhaustion was highest in studies related to burnout with a percentage of 88.1%. Participants of the internship had moderate depression and moderate severe depression with a response rate of 16.7%. There was a significant difference in mental health concerning the year of study (p=0.001).
Conclusion: PHQ-9 shows that mental status is comparatively lower in female participants between the age group of 20-22 years. To address the situation, management should up with various solutions to tackle such as physical and mental barriers and resolve students with academic and personal burdens.
